What Is a Soumak?

A soumak is another type of flat weave rug that is popular in the Caucasus, parts of Turkey and Persia. The weave is slightly more complex than that in a kilim and a soumak typically has a top and bottom side, with some of the strands used for embroidering the design or from the wefts left hanging loose. Designs in soumaks are often highly detailed and characteristic of certain tribes or the area of production.
