Pictorial Oriental Rugs
Is it a Tapestry or a Pictorial Rug?
Since a tapestry is generally a picture, shouldn’t we just consider a pictorial rug another form of tapestry? Indeed, you can! The term tapestry, however, describes any number of different types of wall decorations that could also double as carpets if they were not hanging vertically. Many handmade rugs, such as petit points, needlepoints, hooked rugs — all may feature designs that look similar to something you usually see in a frame. Another factor is the fact that many tapestries are machine-made, not handmade.
At Kamran’s Oriental Rug Bazaar in Sacramento, we have a very specific meaning when we speak of pictorial rugs. Only a hand knotted Oriental rug, designed for wall hanging or otherwise, is called a pictorial rug. A long historical tradition accompanies Persian rug designs with representations of famous people, especially royalty. Natural scenes are also featured and pictorial rugs come in a great variety, from ancient times to today.
Whether you choose to display your pictorial rug in a frame, as a wall hanging or as a rug is up to you, the customer. Our responsibility at Kamran’s is to help you find exactly the handmade pictorial rug you are looking for!
